FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Newman volleyball team came up short Tuesday evening falling to Arkansas Fort Smith in straight sets (3-0). The Jets fall to 1-19 on the year and drop to 0-5 in the Heartland.
The Jets jumped out early in the first set taking a 3-2 lead off Hailey Braddy's kill. The match would swing in the opposite direction shortly thereafter as the Jets handling became sloppy. UAFS used an 8-0 run midway through taking the first set 25-10.
The Jets came out flat footed in the second set falling behind 6-0, before burning an early timeout. The Jets got kills from Braddy and Kenlee Martin out of the timeout, sparking a 3-0 run cutting the Lions lead in-half 6-3. UAFS much like the first set used another big run taking the second set 25-11 and gaining a 2-0 match lead.
The Jets trailing 2-0 in the match would not go away quietly in the third set matching the Lions early on. The Jets gained some momentum halfway through the set using a 3-0 run with kills coming from Yemima Buana and Hailey Braddy followed by a service ace from Trinity Conley cutting the UAFS lead to 13-9. The Lions however gained momentum back with a 6-0 run going on to take the third and decisive set 25-15.
- Hailey Braddy led the Jets' offense with nine kills
- Trinity Conley recorded 10 digs
The Jets will return to Fugate Gym Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13) as they host conference leading Lubbock Christian with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m.
