LAWTON, Okla. – Newman University fell in its season opener on Friday (Nov. 9) by a score of 103-69 to Cameron University in the Heartland – Lone Star Challenge. The Jets started out shooting the ball well but a cold spell midway through the first half led to a 17-point deficit at the break.
The Jets played most of the game from behind, only gaining the lead at 12-11 with 13:27 left in the first half after Juwan Davenport knocked down a jumper. Allen Wilson knocked down a free throw converting a 3-point play, pulling the Jets within six at 31-25, but the Aggies went on a 10-0 run as the Jets' offense went just over three minutes without knocking down a field goal. Cameron headed into the locker rooms at the break, leading 54-37.
The Jets pulled to within twelve midway through the second half. Cameron enjoyed its largest lead of the game with 2:01 left in the game, leading by a 36-point margin. Cameron finished the contest shooting a scorching 50.9 percent from the field, while the Jets shot just 37.9 percent.
Marshawn Blackmon had a solid Jets debut recording a team high 21 points and collecting a double-double hauling in 10 rebounds in 31 minutes. Preseason All-Heartland Conference Selection Dametrius Walker added in 16 points.
The Jets return to the floor on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) against Texas A&M Commerce in the final day of the Heartland – Lone Star Challenge. Texas A&M Commerce picked up a 89-82 victory over Oklahoma Christian Friday evening (Nov. 9).
