Defensive Pressure and Balanced Scoring Guides Jets to First Win of Season

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman Univesrity men's basketball team put their early season woes to rest with a thrashing 97-51 victory over Manhattan Christian Wednesday evening (Nov. 14) in their home opener.

Senior guard Dametrius Walker had the early hot hand nailing back-to-back treys sparking an 8-0 start for the Jets just 2:15 into the contest. The Newman defensive pressure set the tone forcing five of Manhattan Christians twelve first half turnovers in the first 3:50. Allen Wilson nailed the Jets third 3-pointer of the first half extending the Newman lead out to 13-0. Manhattan Christian's Alex Mitura knocked down a 3-pointer with 14:09 halting the Jets 15-0 start.

Marshawn Blackmon once again was a nightmare inside for the opposition recording 12 of his 15 first half points in a span of 3:31 during a 16-0 Newman run late in half, giving the Jets a 43-14 lead.

Newman continued to balance the offensive scoring in the second half. Midway through the second half the Jets went on a 15-0 run with five different individuals scoring in a matter of 6:38. Newman continued their hot shooting in the second half shooting 62.5% from the field.

The Jets defense held the Thunder to 36.0% from the field for the game, while creating 26 points off 20 Manhattan Christian turnovers.

Blackmon led all scorers with 25 points for the third consecutive time this season, while pulling down a team high five rebounds.

The Jets will continue the homestead Saturday afternoon (Nov. 17) at 3 p.m. as they host Emporia State.
