WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman baseball team split day 2 with St. Edward's losing a close game 1 2-1, but turning around and winning game 2 11-5, The Jets start off conference well with this split of a quality conference opponent.
Game 1
Key Sequence
The Jets (10-16, 2-2 Heartland) were looking at a two-run deficit going into the seventh inning against the Hilltoppers (14-11, 2-2 Heartland), Newman was able to get bases loaded with one out but the Hilltoppers were able to get a late double play to get the game one victory.
How It Happened
-St. Edward's was able to get started in the bottom of the second when TJ Giselbach singled to left field bringing up Zach Schindler who would single to right center advancing Giselbach to third, Dylan May would ground into a double play scoring Giselbach and giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead. In the third, William Hairston would double to left field and would later score on a fielding error giving the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead.
-The Jets were able to cut into the St. Edward's lead in the seventh, Clay Druin singled up the middle bringing up Aaron Mack who reached on a fielding error, Turner Lace would give the Jets a bunt single advancing both runners, but the Jets were halted with a double play scoring Druin but Newman would fall just short losing game 1 2-1.
Game 2
Key Sequence
The Jets (10-16, 2-2 Heartland) had big second inning being able to capitalize on Hilltopper (14-11, 2-2 Heartland) mistakes as well as working pitches for walks, singles and home runs, contribution coming from Paul Rupnik, Ked Bailey, and Easton Herring the Jets were able to pick up the big game 2 victory.
How It Happened
-The Jets got off to fast start in the first two innings combing for eight runs with singles from Herring, Daniel Jahnke, a double by Channing Williams and a home run from Bailey got Newman started and their defense was able to keep the Hilltoppers grounded for a majority of the game taking an 8-0 lead in the process.
-In the middle innings, the Hilltoppers were able to get back into the game Daniel Priwin was able to start it off with a single to left field followed by a Robbie Lammons single to left center later in the inning Dylan May would fly out to left field scoring Priwin the lead was now 8-1.
-Newman went on another run of their own late as well, they were able to get more contribution from Bailey and Rupnik who both had RBIs in the inning, runs scored Hake Hanson and Turner Lace now giving the Jets a 10-1 lead.
-St. Edward's was able to get a little more run support with runs scored in the fifth and sixth coming from contribution and runs scored by Daniel Sabatino, Zach Schindler and Dylan May cutting the gets lead to five but the Jets defense was able to control the game in the later inning giving them the game 2 victory 11-5.
Notes
-The Jets were able to split with the Hilltoppers in this conference series, which is the first time 2012 that has happened.
-Newman was able to get contribution from their lineup offensively Rupnik, Bailey, Brian Canfield, Williams, and Herring all went 2-for-5 in the Jets game 2 victory the team would combine for nine RBIs as well.
