Jets Split Series Finale With Wayne State

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman baseball team split the day with Wayne state Sunday, losing game 1 16-6 and winning game 2 11-5. The Jets were looking to gain momentum from Saturday when they also split with the Wildcats.

Game 1

Key Sequence

The Jets were looking at a 2-1 lead going into the third inning when the Wildcats' Travis Miller homered to left center giving the Wildcats a 6-3 lead. Later in the third CJ Neumann doubled to left center scoring Payton Barnes this would give Wayne State an 8-2 lead later in the inning the Wildcats would score two more runs leading them to the 16-6 victory.

How It Happened

-Early in the second for Wayne State Travis Miller lead off the inning with a home run to left field giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

-Newman would get on the board in the next inning when Clay Druin got the team started with a walk bringing up Jake Hanson who singled to second base advancing Druin to second. Channing Williams moved both runners into scoring position with a bunt single. Turner Lace scored two runners on an error from the first baseman giving the Jets a 2-1 lead.

-The top of the third came and both teams were looking to gain an edge, Tanner Simons would start off the inning for the Wildcats tied the game at two. Bryce Bisenius came up later in the inning with a single through the right side scoring Zane Zitek.

-Travis Miller extended the Wayne State lead with a home run scoring Bisenius and David Janes the score was now 6-2. Kyle Thompson would add another run on a wild pitch. Neumann later came up for the Wildcats and doubled to left center scoring Barnes and extending the lead to 8-2. Janes later singled up the middle scoring Neumann and Jake Lemar the Wildcats now had a 10-2 lead.

-In the fifth Newman would get back into the scoring column when Daniel Jahnke singled to the shortstop scoring Brian Canfield and Easton Herring cutting the lead to 10-4. Later in the inning Clay Druin homered to right center scoring Jahnke and cutting the Wayne State lead to four.

-The Wildcats would add two more runs in the sixth with a home run from Simons that would score Barnes and give Wayne State a 12-6 lead.

-Barnes would add another four runs in the seventh for the Wildcats when he hit a home run to left center scoring Thompson, Colin Chick, and Janes giving Wayne State a 16-6 lead and later the victory.

Game 2

Key Sequence

The teams were looking at a 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh when Turner Lace singled to third and later stole second setting up Paul Rupnik for the single to center field scoring lace and later giving the Jets the Victory.

How It Happened

-The teams were going back and forth no one team gaining an edge until the fourth when Will Jordan got the Jets started with a single up the middle. Channing Williams walked setting up a Matt Reeves single to the shortstop loading the bases. Jordan later scored on a wild pitch giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.

-Wayne State would tie the game in the sixth with a single to center field by David Janes scoring CJ Neumann.

-In the bottom of the inning, the Jets got more production from Jahnke and Jordan with doubles by both players scoring two runs and gaining the lead back for the Jets 3-1.

-Jackson Peterson got the Wildcats back on the board with a double to left center scoring Travis Miller and Bryce Bisenius nodding the game at three.

-Newman would regain the lead when Rupnik singled to center field scoring Lace it was now a 4-3 game, Brian Canfield later came up and singled to shortstop scoring Rupnik and giving the Jets a two-run lead.

-The Jets would continue their scoring in the eighth when Lace doubled down the left field line scoring Reeves and Williams. Rupnik would come up later and get a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Spencer Lloyd giving the Jets an 8-3 lead. Jahnke continued his good day at the plate with a double to right center scoring Druin and Lace the Jet lead was now seven. Williams would add a sacrifice fly scoring Canfield and extend the lead to eight.

-The Wildcats weren't going away just yet they picked up two runs on a home run by Kyle Thompson cutting the Jet lead to six but it would be enough as the Jets picked up the victory 11-5.

Notes

-Will Jordan had a good day at the plate for the Jets in game 1 going 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch. Brian Canfield also had a day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double.

-Daniel Jahnke had a day at the plate in game 2 going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Lace would add two hits, two runs scored, and 2 RBIs to the Jets day as well.

-Roger Wilson gave the Jets seven solid inning only allowing three runs and two walks on the day.
