WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman baseball team split a nonconference game with Oklahoma Christian Friday losing a tight game 1 5-4 and winning by nine runs games two 13-4. The Jets were able to bounce back after a split series last week with Wayne State.
Game 1
Key Sequence
The Jets (6-10) were looking at a two-run deficit going into the sixth inning but the Eagles (6-6) weren't going away the team had gotten a good pitching performance from their starter Mason McAlister going five innings and the bullpen was able to stall the Jets comeback to give Oklahoma Christian the victory.
How It Happened
-Oklahoma Christian was able to get on the board first in the second when Kolten Brown homered to left center scoring Jake Collins and giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
-In the fourth, the Eagles added three more runs when Brice Smith homered to right field scoring Brown and Collins the Oklahoma Christian lead was now 5-0.
-In the bottom of the fourth, the Jets were able to get on the board, Aaron Mack was able to score Clay Druin n a ground ball to the second baseman cutting the Eagles lead to 5-1.
-The Jets would have a big sixth inning first a Canfield single to left field which would score Rupnik, the Eagle lead was now 5-2. Later in the inning, Mack would use a sacrifice fly to score Druin the lead was now 5-3 and the Jets were prepared for a comeback. Channing Williams singled to center field scoring Canfield and it was a one-run game, the Jets were unable to get run support late and the Eagles would get the game 1 victory.
Game 2
Key Sequence
The Jets (6-10) used three innings to get a big lead on the Eagles (6-6), also with the help of some solid starting pitching and bullpen work they were able to preserve the lead and later get the Jets victory.
How It Happened
-The Jets got on the board early with a Paul Rupnik double to left center that would start the early inning rally for the Jets. Later in the inning Clay Druin singled to right field scoring Rupnik putting the Jets up 1-0. Newman would get a home run from Brian Canfield scoring Druin and the Jets were up 3-0.
-The Jets continued their run scoring in the second when Will Jordan singled to left field scoring Turner Lace and giving the Jets a four-run lead. The Jets would get another run on a wild pitch scoring Rupnik, Channing Williams singled to shortstop scoring Canfield and later Mack would single to left field and score Williams the Newman lead was now 8-0.
-The Eagles were able to get some runs on the board in the third when Kyle Bottger grounded out to second scoring Brice Smith the Jet Lead was now 8-1.
-Newman got that run back in the bottom of the third plus more, first Rupnik homered to right center adding another run to the lead, and later Williams doubled to right field scoring Canfield and Druin the Jets lead was now 11-1.
-In the top of the fourth, the Eagles got some run support when Jake Collins doubled to right center scoring Chad Kennedy and Austin Stokes the Newman lead was now cut to seven.
-In the seventh, the Jets tacked on two more runs first Lace would score on a passed ball giving the Jets an eight-run lead, later Newman would get another run on a passed ball Rupnik would score on that ball and the Jets were looking at a nine-run lead and later the game 2 victory.
Notes
-Paul Rupnik had a good day at the plate going 7-for-9 on the day with two doubles and a home run.
-Roger Wilson gave the Jets a solid seven innings striking out four and giving up four in the Newman game 2 victory.
