Jets Able To Get A Good Look At The Rattler's In A Tough Matchup

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman volleyball team lost to St. Mary's in the finale of the Heartland Preview tournament Saturday afternoon in 3 sets, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-13.  The Jets were able to keep it close against the Rattler's giving them a good look before they meet again later in the season.

Key Sequence

The Jets (1-11) were in a back and forth battle with the Rattler's (5-6) in the second set. After a kill by Cassie Pauls, the Jets were looking at a two-point deficit, the team would continue their battle until the end. Newman was able to catch a break when Bree Perry got an error on a bad set making it a one-point game but the Rattler's would get a kill by Julia Deals for the set and game victory.

How It Happened

-In the first set, the Jets were looking to battle the whole way through getting kills from Hailey Braddy, Yemima Buana, and Trinity Conley while Reagen Roth was able to set up all her teammates for their kills. Newman was in a battle the whole set with the Rattler's down by two late in the set. Kills by the Rattler's late gave them the set one victory.

-In set number two, the Jets were deadlocked in another battle looking to gain an advantage after a kill by Kennadi Myers cutting the Rattler's lead to three. Newman battling all the way through until the end after a service error by St. Mary's, cutting the lead to one.

-In the third set, the Jets looking at another close set cutting the St. Mary's lead to two after a Pauls' kill set up by Reagen Roth. The Jets were locked in defense came through on many plays late giving the Jet a chance to get back in the set. The Rattler's got a couple kills late to give them the set and game victory.

Notes

-The Jets were able to total 27 kills as a team and tie with the Rattler's with two blocks each.

-The Jets were able to get a preview of few Heartland teams as the schedule gets ready to turn into conference.

What's Next

The Jets return home for a nonconference matchup as they host park Wednesday, September 19 at 7 p.m.
