JOPLIN, Mo. – The Newman Jets Volleyball team traveled to take on Missouri Southern State. The Jets played well throughout the match, but the same struggles continued down the stretch in this contest.
In the first set, Newman and Missouri Southern went back and forth the whole match. The Jets were down by as many as six points in this set but were able to make a comeback. Newman would go on a 13-5 run to end the first set and win 26-24 to take a 1-0 set.
In the second set, the Jets were set up for another comeback. Trailing 18-17, Newman would struggle to score down the stretch. Missouri Southern would go on a 7-3 run to end the second set, winning 25-20 to even the match up 1-1.
Newman would lead for most of the third but came upon a scoring drought at a crucial point in the set. With the Jets leading 21-13, they would fail to capitalize on a great opportunity to put MSSU away. The Lions would go on a 12-1 run to end the third set as they would win 25-22 and take the lead for the match 2-1.
In the fourth and final set, Newman would fall back into their old ways of struggling to slow down opposing offenses. After battling back from down 11-4, the Jets were able to score five straight points to get it to 11-9. Both teams would go back and forth for the next couple of points before the Lions would go on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 24-12. While facing a set point from the Lions, Newman would go on a 4-0 run before MSSU was able to shut the door and win the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
