WICHITA, Kan. - On Saturday afternoon, the Jets hosted the Rangers for the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. Newman was coming off of a historic night as they set a new school record with 135 points against Manhattan Christian on Wednesday evening. NWOSU was coming off of a 63-55 win over Central Oklahoma last Saturday.
The Jets would score the first four points of the game behind a
Juwan Davenport jumper and two free throws by
David Javorsky. Davenport would hit back to back threes with 15:19 left in the half to give the Jets a 14-6 lead.
Marshawn Blackmon would make a layup to extend the Jets lead to 10. The Jets would live around the 10 point lead mark for the next 6 minutes, until a 3 from by
Omar Boone would extend it to 13 as Newman had the Rangers doubled up, 26-13.
A NWOSU three would cut into the Jets lead making it 10 points. Newman would be able to grow their lead back to twelve with a
Kaleb Allison layup. The Rangers would get it back to 10once more and Allison would again answer with a layup making the lead 30-18. A three pointer from
Allen Wilson with just over 2 minutes left would spark a 10-4 run for the Jets to end the half. In the final 1:16 Allison would make a jumper, Javorsky a three and Blackmon a jumper to give the Jets a 40-22 lead heading into the break.
Neither team would be able to score for the first minute and a half of the second half. NWOSU would score first in the half with a layup at the 18:24 mark. They would make a free throw with 17:45 remaining to cut the Jets lead to 15 points.
Tyjil Hereford would get Newman on the board in the second half when he would score a layup to extend the lead back to 17 points, 42-25.
Omar Boone scored a layup at the 15:22 mark to give the Jets their largest lead of the game as they led 44-25.
The Rangers would score 4 straight points to cut the lead down to 15 before Boone made a layup to make the score 46-29. Blackmon would make two free throws to match the Jets largest lead of 19 points. A Ranger three cut the Newman lead to 52-34. Allison would make a layup to get the lead back to 16. With 2:50 left in the game Hereford would make a jumper to match the Jets highest lead as the score would become 63-44. NWOSU would be able to get the score down 65-53 with 48 seconds left, but that's as close as it would get as our final score would be 65-53.
Newman will be back in action Wednesday, November 20 as they host Cameron University at 7:00 P.M.
