Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jets offense comes alive late in 65-57 win over Cameron

WICHITA, Kan. - On Wednesday night, the Jets hosted the Aggies of Cameron University in a non-conference matchup. Coming into tonight's contest, Newman was riding a three game week streak, while Cameron was looking for their first win of the season. Newman won their last contest against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday 65-53. Cameron fell to Southwestern Oklahoma State last Friday 79-70.

The Jets would be in a fight for most of this contest.  This was a great defensive battle with plenty of lead changes.  Cameron would score the first points of the game with a Nicholas jumper.  The Jets would respond with a Juwan Davenport three pointer and a Tyjil Hereford jumper to give the Jets a 5-2 lead early in the first half. Jacob Birnbaum would extend the lead for the Jets to 10-4 with a dunk that got the student section on their feet. After a layup by Birnbaum would extend the lead to 12-6, Cameron would go on a 5-0 run to cut the Jets lead down to just 1 with 14:46 left in the first half. Newman would respond with a three pointer by Davenport to make the lead 15-11.

Newman would then go two minutes without getting a bucket and Cameron took advantage. The Aggies took a 16-15 with 13:12 left in the first half. With the Jets leading 24-21, Newman would have trouble on offense again with another scoring drought of over two minutes and Cameron pressured Newman and took the lead again with 5:52 left in the first half, 25-24. With the Jets trailing 25-24, Newman would end the first half on a 7-3 run in the final 5 minutes to take a 31-28 lead going into the half.

In the second half, Cameron would score the first four points of the half to take a 32-31 lead.  Newman would get the lead back thanks to a layup by Brian Nebo. After trading buckets, both teams would go on scoreless streaks of two minutes plus. Cameron's Nguyen would make a three pointer to give the Aggies a 37-35 lead with 14:31 left in the second half.

With the score tied at 39-39 and 11 minutes to play, Newman went on a 11-0 run to get their largest lead of the game, 50-39 with 8:25 left. Marshawn Blackmon would make two free throws to give the Jets their largest lead of the game, 14, with 5:34 left to play. Cameron would be able to get the Newman lead down to 5, but it was too little too late as the Jets would hold on to win 65-57.

Marshawn Blackmon led the Jets tonight with 20 points, 11 boards and 4 steals. This was Blackmon's third double-double on the season. Juwan Davenport added 19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.

Newman will have some time off as they will be back in action Friday, November 29 as they travel to Topeka, Kan. to compete in the Washburn Thanksgiving Classic against Truman State at 4:00 pm.
