Jets come from behind attempt against Truman State falls short, 78-72

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Newman Men's Basketball team is on the road this Thanksgiving weekend as they travel to compete in the Washburn Thanksgiving Classic. Newman came into this afternoon's matchup riding a 4 game winning streak. While Truman State was looking to get back to .500 on the season after defeating #7 Missouri Southern State their last time out.

The Jets would get the scoring started with a 3 from Juwan Davenport. A minute later, Marshawn Blackmon would get a steal that would lead to a fastbreak dunk to give Newman an early 5-0 lead. Truman State would score their first basket of the game before Blackmon would make a 3 giving Newman a 8-2 lead at the 16:25 mark. Truman would then score 5 unanswered points to cut the lead down to just 1, 8-7. Kaleb Allison would make a jumper to extend the lead back to 3 before the Bulldogs made a 3 to tie things up at 10-10. On the Jets ensuing possession, Blackmon would score a layup to give Newman back the lead.

Truman would take the lead for the first time in the game after a made free throw and a made jumper. A Davenport jumper would give the Jets the lead back, 14-13 with 12:52 left in the half. After a Kalin Johnson free throw would tie the game up at 19-19, TSU would make a layup to take the lead. Neither team would score for nearly 3 minutes, until the Bulldogs made a jumper to extend their lead to 4. Truman State would finish out the half on a 15-7 run to take a 38-26 lead into the break. 

Jacob Birnbaum would start the half off with a tip in layup after a miss. Truman State would answer with a layup of their own before the Jets would start cutting into the lead. Newman would go on a 5-0 run, capped by a jumper from David Javorsky. TSU would build the lead back up to 10 before a Davenport 3 would make the score 45-38. Tyjil Hereford would score 7 of the Jets next 13 points as Newman was able to get the Bulldog lead down to 3, 49-46 with 12:47 remaining in the game. Truman State would build their lead back to 9 before Brian Nebo would make a layup to get the score to 55-50 with just under 10 minutes left. The Bulldogs would go on a 15-8 run to build their lead back up to 12, matching their largest of the game.

Marshawn Blackmon would start the come back efforts with a bucket, drawing a foul and completing the old fashioned three point play by making his free throw. Juwan Davenport would follow it up with an and-one for himself, cutting the lead down to 6, 70-64 with 1:59 left in the game. The Bulldogs would make two free throws, Davenport would answer back with a 3 to get the lead down to 5 with just over a minute left. Kalin Johnson would score 5 points in the final 17 seconds, unfortunately for the Jets, the Bulldogs didn't miss their free throws down the stretch, going 6-6 from the charity strip with less than a minute left. Truman State would hold on to defeat the Jets 78-72. 

Newman was led in scoring by Marshawn Blackmon with 18, Juwan Davenport with 16 and Kalin Johnson with 13. 

The Jets will be back in action tomorrow, November 30 as they take on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 1:00 P.M.
