Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jets drop second straight MIAA matchup as they fall 77-68 to Rogers State

Claremore, Okla. - The Newman Jets completed their road trip through Oklahoma with a 77-68 loss to former Heartland Conference and now MIAA Conference opponent, Rogers State. Rogers State led from the tip to the final buzzer.

Despite out scoring the Hillcats in the second half, the Jets couldn't overcome the ten point half time deficit they were faced with. Both Juwan Davenport and Allen Wilson would have big nights for the Jets as they would each score at least 20 points on the night. This was Newmans first time having two 20 point scorers since their final Heartland Conference regular season game last season, a matchup against Dallas Baptist when Ben Ayre would go for 32 and Marshawn Blackmon would have 21.

Rogers State (8-1, 2-0) would get their largest lead, 13, at the 12:33 mark of the second half and from there, Newman would start the uphill climb to get back into the game. The Jets would go on a 20-11 run to get the score to within 2 points with just over 2:20 remaining in the ball game. During that run Davenport had 6, Wilson had 5, and Blackmon had 4. Unfortunately for the Jets, the Hillcats shoot free throws well with an average of 83 percent as a team. In the final two minutes of the game, RSU went 11-11 from the charity stripe.

Newman shot 23-56 from the floor for 41 percent, 10-22 from three for 45.5 percent and 12-15 from the free throw line for 80 percent. While Rogers State shot 21-47 for 45 percent from the floor, 9-20 for 45 percent from three and 26-32 from the free throw line for 81 percent. The Jets out rebounded the Hillcats by 5, 35-30, with 10 coming on the offensive end.

Newman was led in scoring by Juwan Davenport with 21 points and Allen Wilson not far behind with 20 points. Marshawn Blackmon notched his sixth double-double of the season scoring 12 points and pulling in 14 rebounds.

Newman (4-5, 0-2) will be back in action Saturday, December 14 as they host Nebraska Christian with tip-off slated for 3:30 P.M.
