WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Regis University Friday afternoon (Feb. 22) at McCarthy Field. The Jets cruised to an 8-2 win in game one, before rallying back from a 5-3 deficit for a 6-5 win over the Rangers in the night cap.
Game 1
Trailing 1-0, after the first three innings, Jake Hanson hit a go-ahead 2-RBI triple to right field with two outs putting Newman ahead 2-1. Hanson's big day continued in the sixth, sending a solo-shot blast over the right field fence sparking a four-run inning as the Jets cruised past the Warriors 8-2.
Dalton Dinkel continued his hot start to the season finishing with a 3-for-4 performance while scoring two runs.
Andrew Snyder notched his second win of the season allowing an early run in the first before settling down working four straight scoreless innings. Snyder was pushed in the sixth as the Rangers trimmed the NU lead to 3-2. Snyder's final line was strong allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking one batter and walking one.
Jacob Stramel worked a scoreless 1.2-innings in relief allowing just two hits in the six batters faced picking up his first save of the season.
Game 2
The Jets wasted no time getting things going, scoring the first two runs of the contest in the bottom half of the first inning. Paul Rupnick scored the game's first run on a passed ball just before the Jets would double their lead 2-0 on Mitchell Austin's RBI single scoring Tuner Lace.
After the Rangers took a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth, the Jets gained some momentum back on a solo shot by Mason Nagle trimming the deficit 5-3 after the fifth inning.
Down to their final 2-outs trailing 5-3, Jake Hanson sent a game tying opposite field homerun over the left field fence knotting things up 5-5.
Will Jordan would conclude the Jets comeback victory with a walk-off sac fly in the bottom of the eighth scoring Matt Reeves completing the doubleheader sweep 6-5.
Rogers Wilson struggled in his second start of the season going 3.2-innings allowing five runs on five hits, striking out a pair and walking a pair. Ryan Boaz picked up his second win of the year pitching a scoreless 4.1-innings of relief, recording five strikeouts allowing just two hits.
The Jets and Rangers will play the third game of the four game set Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) from McCarthy Field with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
