Jets Unable to Get Series Sweep, Settle for 3-1 Series Win Over Regis

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman baseball team's verge at a sweep against Regis University fell just short on Sunday (Feb. 24) as the Jets and Rangers played to a doubleheader sweep. The Jets won the series in the first part of the doubleheader with a 4-2 win over the Rangers. The Rangers bounced back avoiding the sweep shutting the Jets out in game two 4-0. The Jets claimed the weekend four-game series 3-1 and are now 6-3 on the year, while the Rangers are 3-7 on the year.

Game 1

Senior, Paul Rupnick broke the scoreless affair delivering a bases clearing 2-out double to right center in the bottom of the second putting the Jets in-front 3-0. Will Jordan knocked in an insurance run in the bottom of the six as the Jets survived a late Rangers comeback taking game one 4-2.

Zack Erdman started on the bump for the Jets notching his first win of the season allowing a run on four hits in 5.1-innings, striking out four allowing just one walk.

Garrett Hammond worked 1.2-innings in relief picking up his second save of the season despite allowing one run on two hits.

Game 2

A defensive battle was the story line in the second game as both starters were dealing pitching five scoreless innings. The Jets' offense however struggled to get anything going as they were held hitless through the first four innings, until a 2-out single up the middle by Jake Hanson broke up the no-hit bid. Koby Millner followed Hanson's single with one of his own, however the Jets 2-out rally came up empty handed stranding both runners.

In the sixth, the Rangers broke through on the scoreboard with back-to-back 2-out RBI doubles gaining a 2-0 lead. Regis would score two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh putting a damper of a potential Jets series sweep.

Blake Thurnberg (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite a brilliant pitching effort allowing just two runs over 5.2-innings on five hits, while striking out three.

Derek Schumann pitched a scoreless 0.1-inning striking out his lone batter in relief. Skyler White pitched the seventh allowing two runs one earned while giving up two hits.

The Newman offense was silenced in the final game of the series generating just three hits after recording 27 through the first three games of the series.

The Jets will head out on the road to begin Heartland Conference play Friday (Mar. 1) against Arkansas-Fort Smith. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Crowder Field in Fort Smith, Ark.
