Lions Take Doubleheader from Jets Baseball

FORT-SMITH, Ark. — The Newman baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon (Mar. 1) on the road against Arkansas-Fort Smith 4-1, 5-4 in non-conference action. The Jets fall to 6-5 on the year, while the Lions improve to 10-3 on the season.

Game 1

A pitchers dual to say the least as the two teams combined for only 10 combined hits in the seven innings played. Making his first start of the season, redshirt-sophomore Chris Opolka delivered a 1-out double to left center in the third inning gave Newman their first real scoring chance of the game. Senior, Paul Rupnick delivered the first run of the ballgame knocking in Opolka with an RBI groundout giving Newman a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately that would be the lone run the Jets would accommodate for in 7-inning contest.

Andrew Snyder (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing one earned run in the 4-1 loss. Snyder pitched a brilliant game striking out four over 6-innings of work, while allowing just three hits.

A costly error in the bottom of the sixth was the difference maker in the first game as the Lions scored all four runs in the inning in a 4-1 defeat.

Game 2

Falling behind 4-0 after three innings of play, the Newman offense woke up in the fourth on a Daniel Blake 2-run homerun his second of the year trimming the deficit to 4-2, but the Jets were not done cutting the Lions lead to one after Turner Lace grounded into an RBI fielder's choice scoring Mason Nagle.

Down to their final six-outs trailing 5-3, Daniel Blake continued his strong day driving in his third run of the game scoring Jake Hanson cutting the deficit to 5-4. In the ninth the Jets would strand the tying run at first base spoiling the comeback attempt.

Blake Thurnberg (1-2) suffered his second straight loss of the season, allowing four runs over 2.1-innings on three hits, while striking out two and walking four.

Last week's Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week, Ryan Boaz continued his strong performance out of the bullpen allowing just one run in 5.2-innings on three hits, striking out three, while allowing just one walk in the relief effort.

The Jets will look to avoid a series sweep Saturday afternoon (Mar. 2). First pitch for the series finale is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from the Crowder Field in Fort-Smith, Ark.
