FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Newman baseball team concluded their series with Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday by taking the series finally 7-3. The Jets were looking to end their three-game skid with a good win against the Lions.
The Jets were facing a 2-0 deficit going into the third, Conner Langrell got things started by reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman. Langrell would later score on a Dalton Dinkel single to left field, Jake Hanson would later come up with a single through the right side scoring Rupnik and tying the game at two. Daniel Blake would later work a bases load walk scoring Dinkel, Blake would later advance on a pass ball which would also score Hanson and the Jets found themselves with a 4-2 lead.
Pitcher Derek Schumann gave the Jets a masterful relief pitching performance going five strong innings, giving up one hit, striking out five and keeping the Jets lead. The Jets' offense would reciprocate in the top of the ninth as they added some insurance runs beginning with a Hanson singling down the right field line, Mitchell Austin would add another single advancing Hanson to third. A Mason Nagle bunt would advance Austin to second and the Jets later had bases loaded for Koby Millner who came up big with a single through the right side scoring Hanson and Austin for the 7-3 lead and later the game 3 victory.
The Jets got big production from their bats four jets finished the day with multiple hits (Rupnik, Hanson, Blake and Millner)
The Jets pitching was also good only giving up a combined three runs on the day.
The Jets are back on the road Wednesday March 6 as they take on Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas with the nine inning game starting at 5 p.m.
