WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 18 ranked Newman wrestling team's upset bid over No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney fell short Monday evening (Feb. 4) as the Lopers defeated the Jets 35-9. The Jets fall to 3-6 in dual play on the year and drop to 1-3 in the MIAA.
Falling behind 29-0 just after the midway point of the dual, sophomore Tyler Lawley sparked some Jets noise inside the Fugate Gymnasium. Despite a rough first period finding himself trailing 14-0, Lawley decided to take top to begin the second period, knowing an escape point could lead to a tech fall defeat. However Lawley decided to close the match on his own with a second period fall (4:28) over Kearney's Wesley Dawkins putting the Jets on the board ending the 29-0 Lopers run.
After landing inside the InterMat's top-12 individual poll this past week, No. 8 ranked Kameron Frame handed the Jets their second victory of the dual with an 11-5 first period sudden victory on a takedown and four-point near fall defeating Nick Babcock.
In the final match of the dual featuring the top two wrestlers in the 157-pounds, No. 2 Tyler Mies suffered just his second loss of the season in a 9-3 decision defeat to No. 1 Matt Malcom as Kearney took the match 35-9.
