CLEBURNE, Texas — The Newman Baseball team took on Oklahoma Baptist University Friday afternoon, the Jets were able to pick up their first win of the season winning 6-2. The Jets were able to bounce back and get their offense moving and getting the win in nine innings.
In the First three innings, the Jets were able to take an early 2-0 lead after Paul Rupnik singled up the middle and would advance on a throw scoring Jon Coufal who walked earlier in the inning to give the Jets an early 1-0. Later in that inning Mitchell Aus singled to center field scoring Rupnik and giving the Jets a 2-0 lead going into the middle innings.
In the top of the fifth inning, Rupnik got the Jets started with a single up the middle and a stolen base which set Dalton Dinkel up for the insurance run with a single into right field giving the Jets a 3-1 lead going into the later stages of the game.
Going into the top of the ninth, the Jets already had a 4-2 lead looking to add on and get the game victory. Koby Milner was able to single up the middle and advance on a wild pitch, setting up Rupnik who would walk and also advance on a wild pitch, the Jets were set up with two runners in scoring position. After Dinkel was intentionally walked, a sacrifice fly by Aus scored Milner and the lead was now 5-2, Newman was able to get another insurance run when Daniel Blake singled to third scoring Rupnik and giving the Jets a 6-2 lead and later the victory.
Pitcher Andrew Snyder went seven innings, allowing four hits, one run, while walking three batters and striking out four. Derek Schumann pitched two innings of relief allowing two hits, one run, two walks, and struck out two preserving the victory for the Jets.
