Jets Drop Both Games on Opening Day in the 4HIM Baseball Classic

CLEBURNE, Texas. — The Newman University baseball team opened the 2019 season on a cool Thursday morning and evening (Feb. 7) in the 4HIM Baseball Classic. The Jets dropped both games, falling to Oklahoma Christian 14-4 and suffered a late 6-5 defeat to Texas A&M University – Kingsville. The Jets fall to 0-2 on the year.

Newman had a handful of chances on offense, picking up multiple baserunners in the four innings. However the Eagles pitch staff limited the damage getting out of a bases loaded jam in the third inning. OC rattled off thirteen hits in the win, including three innings of crooked numbers in the first, second and fourth frames.

Roger Wilson got the start for the Jets, throwing two innings, picking up a pair of strikeouts. Wade Winter provided strong relief work out of the bullpen working a scoreless fifth leaving a pair of runners on base.

Dalton Dinkel collected three base hits for the Jets, clubbing a pair of doubles. Mitchell Austin and Kyle Koch each recorded a pair of singles

Game 2 vs Texas A&M University – Kingsville
 

The Jets rallied twice from a two run deficit, but were unable to get over the hump as the Javelinas rallied late scoring the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth handing the Jets their second loss of the day 6-5.

Zack Erdman got the start giving the Jets four strong innings, allowing just six hits, while fanning six batters.

Paul Rupnik hand another sold game at the dish collecting a pair of hits, drawing two walks and crossing the plate twice. Dalton Dinkel picked up a pair of hits while driving in two runs. Daniel Blake and Turner Lace each finished with two hits apiece.

The Jets will have a quick turnaround as they will face Oklahoma Baptist tomorrow (Feb. 8) at 12:30 p.m. in the second day of the 4HIM Baseball Classic held in Cleburne, Texas.
