LUBBOCK, Texas. – The Newman baseball team had a tough go in the opening set Friday afternoon (Mar. 29) against No. 11 ranked Lubbock Christian dropping both games 15-4 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 28-1. The Jets (12-15, 1-4) will look to salvage a game in the three game set tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 30) in the series finale.
GAME 1
Things looked to be looking good for the Jets as Chris Opolka give the Jets an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning with an RBI single to left center driving home Paul Rupnik. After starting pitcher Ryan Boaz got the first two outs in the opening frame, LCU rallied together three straight 2-out hits sparking a two run rally gaining a 2-1 lead after the first.
In the second inning, Tyler Push helped the Jets evened the score with an RBI double to center field scoring Will Jordan on the play. Push later in the inning crossed the plate giving Newman the lead back 3-2. Unfortunately that would be the last lead the Jets would have as the Chaparrals clubbed 14 hits over the final six innings striking for 13-straight runs, claiming the series opener 15-4.
Paul Rupnik added a run for the Jets in the seventh with an RBI triple to right center, scoring Jordan on the play.
Ryan Boaz (3-1) made just his second start of the season, going 3.0-innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits, while punching out five in the losing decision.
GAME 2
While Newman collected just six hits in the second game, Lubbock Christian's bats continued to stay hot managing 28 hits and six home runs.
Lubbock Christian got things rolling in the opening inning, plating three runs in the home half of the first. Dylan Blake collected a 1-out single in the second hoping to wake up the offense. But just one batter later the Chaparrals were out of the inning unscathed, and the Jets next came up to the plate trailing 8-0. A 12-run home fifth put the game out of reach stretching the LCU lead out to 26-0.
Jace Piepkorn crossed the plate for the Jets lone run of the contest on a double-play groundout in the top of the seventh.
Derek Schumann (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season pitching 1.1-innings allowing five runs (3-earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out one in the effort.
Senior outfielder, Paul Rupnik finished with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish.
