Jets Fall Short As They Drop Two To Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA, Kan. — After defeating future conference member Emporia State Wednesday, the Newman baseball team returned to McCarthy Field for a matchup with Oklahoma Christian. The Jets dropped both games of the doubleheader Friday as the offense didn't wake up until the last inning of the first game and after a sloppy defensive game by both teams, the Jets came up just short in a one run game.

Game 1

The Jets and Eagles started off game one in a pitchers battle as both pitchers didn't give an inch offensively until late in the game. The Eagles would strike first in the fourth and would not give up the lead, after a single and a double by Oklahoma Christian the Jets found themselves in a three-run whole.

Later in the sixth inning the Jets found themselves in a bigger whole as the Eagles were able to continue their scoring output. The Jets didn't go away easy and in the seventh Newman was able to cut the Eagle lead to five after Kyle Koch got the rally started with a home run to left field. Later a Jared Hasik walk and a Jon Coufal single put the Jets in a great position late. Tyler Push and Koby Millner gave the Jets two more runs with a single and double but that wasn't enough as the Jets fell 9-4 in game one.

Game 2

In game two the Eagles got on the board first but the Jets were right behind them and in the bottom of the fourth inning the team found themselves down by a run after Mitchell Austin scored on a wild pitch, Kyle Koch scored on an error, and Conner Langrell scored on an error by the shortstop, the Jets were now down 4-3. The game would be tied at the end of fifth after Paul Rupnik reached on a throwing error, advancing the third and scoring on another throwing error by the catcher.

Newman would find themselves with the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after an error by the shortstop put Spencer Lloyd and Langrell in scoring position early, Koby Millner reached on another error by the shortstop scoring Lloyd and moving push to second. Paul Rupnik put the Jets on top with a double to center field scoring two and Newman now had a 7-6 lead. The Eagles weren't done with their output as they found two runs in the top of the ninth and that would be enough for them to take game two 9-8.

Three Jets were able to get strong production from three, four, and five hitters (Rupnik, Austin, and Koch) who all had two hits each in game two.

The Jets conclude their series with the Eagles Saturday with an early start time as first pitch comes at 11 AM.
