Late Innings Doom Jets in Series Opener to Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Newman baseball team was back in conference play as they took on Rogers State in their final road conference matchup of the season. The Jets lost a close one to the Hillcats after a big Hillcat inning in the seventh. The Jets were coming off a nonconference win Tuesday but couldn't bring it together in the loss Thursday afternoon.

The Jets got on the board early and often in the game against Rogers State, Paul Rupnik got things started with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Tyler push who singled earlier in the inning and the Jets had an early 1-0 lead. In the third the Jets got back on the board, Koby Millner reached on a fielder's choice scoring Push and advancing on the throw, later Mithell Austin singled through the right-side scoring Millner and giving the Jets a 3-0 lead as the game move into the later stages.

Newman was able to get two more runs in the seventh as some extra insurance as Jace Piepkorn singled through the left side, bringing up Push as he moved the runners over on a sac bunt. Millner would get an RBI next with a ground out to second base and Kyle Koch scored another run with a singled through the left side the Jets now had a 5-1 lead as the game moved into the final innings.

The Jets bullpen was now in to close the game but the struggles stood out as the Hillcats got back into the game with a single, double, and a home run to take a one-run lead over the Jets and Rogers State would close out the game getting the game one victory 6-5.

Tyler Push gave the Jets a big contribution in the leadoff spot going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Jets conclude their series with the Hillcats tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 18) with first pith coming at 12:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader.
