CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Newman University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Rogers State Friday afternoon (Apr. 19) at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Jets were overpowered by the Hillcats pitching at the plat in both contests, falling 5-2 in the opener before taking a 13-3 loss in the nightcap.
GAME 1
The Jets could only mustard together five base pokes in the opener. Conner Langrell and Tyler Push each record one of the Jets five hits, while accommodating for the lone RBI's. Mitchell Austin, Chris Opolka and Turner Lace recorded the other three base knocks. Jacob Stramel (0-4) started on the bump for the Jets as he allowed three runs on two hits, walking five and striking out one in 3.0-innings of work. Andrew Snyder came on in relief tossing 3.0-innings allowing two runs on five hits walking five and fanning one Hillcats batter.
GAME 2
Looking to salvage the final game in the series, Conner Langrell gave the Jets a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single through the right side scoring Will Jordan. The NU lead would however last for a short period as RSU took advantage of a costly NU error scoring eight runs with two outs taking 8-1 lead into the third. The Hillcats would stretch their lead out to 11-2 after scoring a run in the third and two in the fourth before scoring two more runs in the eighth enforcing the run rule.
Turner Lace accounted for the Jets third run of the game lacing a double in the seventh inning scoring Will Jordan. Jordan led the Jets in hitting recording a 2-for-3 performance. Lead-off hitter Tyler Push reached base three times in the effort drawing three walks.
Starting pitcher Blake Thunberg (2-5) lasted 1.2-innings allowing six runs (0-earned) on three hits, walking three and striking out three Hillcats.
Newman will return home to begin an eight game homestead beginning on Tuesday evening (Apr. 23) against Northwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kan.
