WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team split a pair of high scoring contests Friday (Apr. 26) against St. Edward's. The Jets snapped a 13-game Heartland Conference skid in the opener outslugging the Hilltoppers 13-9, but fell to the Hilltoppers in the nightcap, 15-7.
GAME 1
Sophomore, Tyler Push drove in four runs with a 3-for-3 performance, while Turner Lace smashed his first home run of the season with a three shot in the sixth guiding the Jets to a 13-9 series opening win.
In a game that saw six different lead changes, the Jets outscored SEU 7-2 over the final 3.5-innings tying a season best 13 runs on 15 total hits.
Senior, Paul Rupnik recorded three hits and scored three times, while Daniel Blake added a 2-for-4 performance while driving one run in and crossing the plate once.
Zack Erdman (4-3) earned the victory pitching 3.1-innings of relief allowing two runs on one hit, walking a pair and fanning four Hilltoppers.
Jacob Stramel earned his second save of the season pitching 1.2-innigns allowing one run on one hit, walking three and striking out three.
GAME 2
After Newman jumped out to a 5-2 lead through five innings, SEU would outscore NU 13-2 over the final four innings earning a 15-7 doubleheader split.
Tyler Push, Jake Hanson and Turner Lace accommodated for six of the nine NU hits. Hanson led the Jets' offense hitting a pair of solo-home runs.
Starting pitcher, Blake Thunberg earned the no-decision tossing 5.0 strong innings allowing two runs before getting into trouble in the sixth inning. Thunberg allowed three runs on no hits, while walking three batters, before being pulled with one out in the sixth.
Newman will look to take the rubber match Saturday afternoon (Apr. 26) as they go for their first conference win of the season, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from McCarthy Field.
