WICHITA, Kan. — After splitting a day night doubleheader with St. Edward's on Friday the Newman baseball team was looking to take the rubber match in Saturday's finale. The Jets were looking to move forward from their troubles in conference after getting a win on Friday.
In the first four innings, the pitchers were locked in a dual going four scoreless and with minimal mistakes from their defenses. The Hilltoppers got on the board in the fifth after a McPhail single to left field scoring Markee. As the game moved along pitcher Ryan Boaz really showed out for the Jets pitching another gem for the team as the offense would follow in his footsteps and begin the comeback.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, staring down a three-run deficit the Jets were getting things started with a single from Paul Rupnik and a single from Will Jordan. Kyle Koch Later came up and was able to work a walk bringing up Jake Hanson who singled through the left side for two RBIs putting the Jets within one. In the Bottom of the ninth, looking to make another statement with another comeback the Jets would prevail once again. Turner Lace got things started with a single though the left side, Rupnik would come up with another clutch single and after a Jordan walk, Kyle Koch came up with a clutch single down the left field line for the 4-4 tie.
Going into extra innings it was all up to the Newman bullpen who as a whole have had their struggles this season. In the top of the tenth inning, the Jets were able to get two quick outs against the Hilltoppers and things were looking up for the Jets bullpen, but later in that inning the Hilltoppers were able to work some counts and get some men on base and with a two out rally they were able to take the three-run lead and get the victory in the bottom of the tenth 7-4.
Pitcher Ryan Boaz went nine strong innings only giving up four run, while striking out six Hilltoppers.
The Jets had five men with multi-hit games Saturday (Rupnik, Push, Jordan, Koch, and Lace), Kyle Koch also added two RBIs to his line.
The Jets continue their end of the season home stand as they host William Jewell Tuesday (Apr. 30) with first pitch coming at 3 PM.
