Jets cruise past Bronchos to close out 2020

WICHITA, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon, the Newman Jets finished up their home stand and 2020 as they hosted Central Oklahoma trying to rebound from their overtime loss against Fort Hays State.  The Jets would control the game from start to finish and cruise past the Bronchos 90-68 inside Fugate Gymnasium.

The Jets and the Bronchos would exchange baskets with one another with neither team gaining much separation. It took until 14:10 left in the first half where the Jets would take control of this game. The Jets would shoot lights out from the 3 point line as they would go 69.23% in the first half.  The Jets would get their biggest lead of the half at the end of the first half with a 3 point basket by Joel Boyce to give the Jets a 46-19 lead going into the break. The Jets were able to keep the Bronchos offense in check, containing them to 7-30 from the field in the first half and 2-14 from three.

In the second half, the Jets would continue the assault as they would gain their biggest lead at 32 with 8:09 left after Jacob Birnbaum made a 3 point basket to give the Jets a 65-33 lead.  The Jets were able to control the entirety of the second half as they would finish 2020 with a win at home vs Central Oklahoma by a final score of 90-68.  The Jets would have three players in double figures in the game and almost everyone who played had at least a point in the win.

Newman (2-4, 2-4) shot 29-53 from the floor for 54.7 percent, 13-23 from three for 56.5 percent and 19-26 from the free throw line for 73.1 percent. While Central Oklahoma shot 18-61 for 29.5 percent, and 6-27 from 3 for 22.2 percent. The Jets out-rebounded the Bronchos by 12, 44-32.

Branden Bunn led the Jets in scoring with 18 points and 4 rebounds.  Joel Boyce added 15 points and 6 rebounds in the Jets win.

Newman will start 2021 on the road as they travel to Emporia to take on Emporia State on Jan. 2 with tip-off at 4:00 PM.
