LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats would start the game on a 5-0 run with. A jumper by Faith Mason-Vestal would end the run to make the score 5-2 with 7:41 left in the first quarter. The Jets would tie the game thirty seconds later on a three point basket by Haley Albers. After a K-State layup made the score 7-5, the Jets would go on a 9-2 run to gain a 14-9 lead with 3 minutes left in the opening period. The Wildcats would respond as they would end the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead the Jets 15-14 after the first quarter. After getting the score all squared at 17, the Wildcats would go on an 11-0 run to jump out to a 28-17 lead with 4:30 left in the half. Both teams would get a basket and the Jets would make a free throw to make the score 30-20 in favor of Kansas State at the Half. The Jets would start the third quarter by going on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to three points 33-30 just three minutes into the second half. Kansas State would respond with six quick points before Newman would put together a 9-4 run to get the deficit back to three points with 1:47 left in the quarter. The Jets were able to get it as close as two points in the quarter before K-State would hit a three to close out the quarter and take a five point advantage into the final period, 47-42. Sydney Nilles would make a couple of free throws to open up the fourth quarter and the Jets would take their first lead since the first quarter on a Brook Haney three point basket that gave the Jets the lead 51-49 with 4:41 left in the fourth quarter. With Newman up one, the Wildcats would go on a 5-0 run to give themselves a four point lead with 2:45 left. On the next two possessions, Haney would make a jumper and Abbey George a free throw to make the score 56-55 in favor of the Wildcats with 1:44 left. With a one point lead, Kansas State would make a three point basket to go up four points with 51 seconds left, 61-57. Nilles would answer with a layup to make the score 61-59 with 30 seconds left. The wildcats would make a couple free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game as Kansas State would survive upset minded Newman 63-59. The Jets were able to outscore the wildcats in the second half 39-33.
THE COACHES
Darin Spence begins his ninth season as the Jets head coach, leading the Jets to a 1-1, 1-1 in the MIAA record so far in the 2020-21 season. Spence has compiled a 591 wins as a head women's basketball coach over a 29-year span across NCAA Division I and Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA schools. His eight years with the Jets have seen him amass a record of 120-112 overall and a 59-53 mark in Heartland Conference play. Under Spence's tenure, the Jets reached the Heartland Conference tournament in six of his seven seasons. Before coming to Newman, Spence spent one season at Barton Community College and eight seasons at Division I New Mexico State.
Toby Wynn is in his third season as the Lady Hornets Basketball coach for the 2020-21 season. Wynn is 46-16 in his second year as the head coach of the Lady Hornets. He is the second coach to win at least 20 games and go to the NCAA Tournament in his first two years at Emporia State. His 22 regular season wins last year were the second most by a first year coach in Lady Hornet history. He has won at least 20 games in each of his 15 seasons as a head coach, including four 30 win seasons.
ABOUT THE JETS
Newman is 1-1 on the season, 1-1 in the MIAA. Newman is led in scoring by Senior Guard Brooke Haney at 10.0 points per game. Madison Birnbaum leads the Jets in rebounding at 8.5 rebounds per game. Abbey George is only 12 rebounds away from moving into 2nd in school history for career rebounds.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 1-1 on the season, 1-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets are led in scoring by Tre'Zure Jobe at 24 points per game. Daley Handy leads the Hornets in rebounding at 7.5 rebounds per game.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the ninth meeting between these two schools with Emporia State leading the series over Newman 5-3. These teams have split the last four meetings but the Jets won the last meeting 68-67 in Wichita, Kan. on a Buzzer Beater.
LAST TIME VS EMPORIA STATE
Newman would score the first basket of the game on a Faith Mason-Vestal layup to give the Jets the early lead. Emporia State (19-6, 12-4) would then follow with a 7-2 run to gain the 7-4 lead with 6:33 left in the first quarter. A Brooke Haney three would tie the game up at 7 with 5:46 left in the quarter. ESU would end the quarter on a 14-7 run to take a 21-14 lead after one period of play. In the second quarter, with Emporia State still holding the lead, Newman was able to cut down the deficit and eventually gain a three point lead 33-30 with 1:21 left in the quarter. Emporia State would hit a jumper with 47 seconds left to make it 33-32 for Newman heading to the intermission. In the second half, the Hornets would jump out to six point lead before Newman was able to erase that on a quick 7-0 run to take the lead 47-46 with 3:06 left in the third quarter. With both teams tied at 48, Newman would score the final four points of the quarter to take a 52-48 lead heading into the final period of play. With the score 66-66 in the fourth, Emporia State would go to the line with 11 seconds left, they would make 1 of 2 to take a one point advantage. Newman, with no timeouts remaining rushed down the court but Makayla Mack would miss the layup, luckily for the Jets, Madison Birnbaum was there for the rebound which would turn into a jump ball with Newman having the arrow. The officials would go to the monitor to check the clock, this would allow coach Darin Spence to get a play drawn up with no timeouts remaining. With 1.2 seconds on the clock, Newman would inbound the ball and after a nice screen by Potter, Birnbaum would be wide open underneath the basket, where she would finish the layup with .2 seconds left to give the Jets the lead. Emporia State had one more chance as they would advance the ball and try to draw a foul on the inbounds but came away unsuccessful as the Jets would complete the comeback and defeat Emporia State 68-67 in a thriller.

The Jets will finish their road trip as they travel to Topeka, Kansas to take on Washburn University on Saturday Dec. 5 with tip-off at 1:00 PM.
