ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Newman Baseball was on the road for the second straight weekend to open up the season. This time they were in Arkansas taking part in the GAC/MIAA Challenge hosted by Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist.
Newman started off the weekend playing Oklahoma Baptist and would fall behind early as they would give up two runs in the second inning. The Jets would be able to get into the scoring column in the top of the seventh inning to cut OKBU's lead to 2-1. Oklahoma Baptist would respond in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to extend their lead to 6-1. OKBU would add one more run in the bottom of the eighth to end the scoring for the game and win 7-1.
Will Jordan would go 1 for 2 with a walk in the contest.
Ryan Boaz, the Jets starting pitcher, would go 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts.
The second game of the weekend for the Jets came against Head Coach
Drew Maus' former squad in Henderson State. The Reddies would jump out to a 2-0 lead after 2 innings. The Jets would tie the game up in the top of the fifth inning on a
Devin Beard RBI double that would score
Koby Millner and a sac bunt from
Will Jordan that would score Beard. HSU would add 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh and 6 runs in the bottom of the eighth while holding Newman scoreless in the final 4 innings to win 11-2.
Devin Beard would go 2 for 3 with a walk and 1 RBI.
Derek Schumann would get the start for the Jets and go 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts.
In the Jets final game of the weekend against Ouachita Baptist, NU would strike in the top of the first inning as
Dalton Dinkel would bring in
Will Jordan with a single to left field. The Jets would add another run to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth when
Tyler Push would score on a fielders choice from the bat of Jordan. Ouachita Baptist would get on the board in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring 3 runs to take a 3-2 lead. In the top of the ninth, Newman would get a two out walk from
Kyle Koch to put some pressure on the Tigers. Push would come up with a two out double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Push finished the game going 3 for 5 with a double.
Logan Dickey would get the start for the Jets on mound and go 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts.
Newman will be back in action this weekend as they host Illinois-Springfield for their home opener with a double header on Saturday with a start time of 12:00 pm and a single 9 inning game on Sunday with first pitch slated for 12:00 pm.
