ALVA, Okla. – After having to reschedule the game and switch locations, Newman and Northwestern State were able to finally get their game in this week. With switching the location of today's game, the game that was originally scheduled to be in Alva on April 21 will now be played in Wichita. In today's game, the Rangers jumped out to an early lead on their way to an 11-6 victory.
The Rangers would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning as they would put 3 runs on the board on 3 hits. Newman would get on the board in the top of the third inning after back to back walks by
Hayden VanDePol and
Devin Beard. After a pitching change,
Mitchell Austin would put down a sacrifice bunt to move the two runners to second and third.
Will Jordan would bring in both runners with an RBI single to make the score 3-2. NWOSU would answer back in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own on a wild pitch to stretch their lead back to 2 runs.
The Jets would give up another run in the bottom of the fourth inning before getting two more in the top of the fifth after a one out walk from Dinkel would bring up
Kyle Koch. Koch would then rip a triple to centerfield that would score Dinkel, making the score 5-3.
Matt Reeves would come in to pinch hit for Quintanilla where he would bring in Koch with a single, bringing the Jets to within 1 run 5-4. The Rangers would respond with 1 run in the bottom the fifth and 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Newman would get 1 more run in the top of the eighth inning when Beard would get the inning started with a double and would move to third after a ground out bringing Jordan to the plate.
Will Jordan would smack a double down the right field line that would score Beard. With Jordan on second, the Jets would ground out and strikeout ending the threat. Once again, NWOSU would respond with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
With three outs left, Newman would start the inning with a strikeout that brought Max Bazja, pinch hitting, to the plate. Bajza would hit a double to centerfield.
Tyler Push would come up next and hit a single that would bring in Bajza.
Hayden VanDePol would single, moving Push over to third base. The Rangers would end the game on a strike-em-out throw-em-out as Beard would strikeout and VanDePol would be caught trying to steal second.
The Jets would have three players with two hits apiece.
Tyler Push would go 2 for 5 with a walk and an RBI.
Will Jordan would go 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and
Kyle Koch would go 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Newman will be back in action on Friday as they open up MIAA Conference play at Central Oklahoma with first pitch coming at 5:00 pm.
