EDMOND, Okla. – The Newman baseball team took the short trip down I-135 for their first conference series in the MIAA era. The Jets would break things open in the middle innings on their way to an 11-0 run rule of the Bronchos in 8 innings.
Dalton Dinkel would get the scoring started for the Jets as he would hit the first of Newman's four homeruns on the day in the 2
nd inning, a solo shot that would put Newman ahead 1-0. After a one out double from
Hayden VanDePol, Dinkel would get a base hit to center field to bring in VanDePol for his second RBI of the game. Two pitches later,
Kyle Koch would blast a homerun to right center to give NU a 4-0 lead after 4 innings.
In the next inning, Newman would continue right where they left off the inning before as they would put up 5 runs to extend their lead to 9-0.
Tyler Push would get things started in the inning with a leadoff double.
Devin Beard would follow it up with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs for
Will Jordan. Jordan would put down a bunt and beat it out for an infield single that would load the bases.
Mitchell Austin would then draw a walk to bring in Push to score Newman's first run of the inning. VanDePol would reach on a fielder's choice as the third baseman would throw out Beard at the plate. The Bronchos catcher would try to turn a double play and ended up throwing the ball away allowing Jordan to score and Austin to advance to third. Dinkel would come up next, he would hit his second homerun of the day, this time a 3 run homerun to right center that would put the Jets ahead 9-0 in the fifth inning.
Both teams would go scoreless in the 6
th and 7
th, but in the 8
th NU would put up two runs on a Push two run homerun to left field after Zach Hargrove walked. With these two runs, Newman put the pressure on Central Oklahoma as they would need to score two runs to avoid the run rule.
While the Jets were doing all of this scoring,
Ryan Boaz and the Jets defense would be solid all game long. Boaz, earning his first win of the season, only allowed two runners to reach third base and two to reach second base. He would throw a complete game shutout giving up just 5 hits, 2 walks, recording 7 strikeouts. Boaz also relied on his team to make some plays for him as he would get 11 fly outs and 4 ground-outs in the game, while having zero errors. Boaz also got the Bronchos to go 3 up 3 down in four of the eight innings. In two others, he only faced one extra batter twice and never faced more than 5 batters in an inning.
Newman would tally 12 hits on the game. Push went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's, a double and a homerun. Jordan went 2 for 4 with a walk. Dinkel went 3 for 5 with 5 RBI's, 2 homeruns and 3 runs scored.
The Jets and Bronchos will be back on the diamond tomorrow for game 2 of the 3 game series with first pitch coming at 3:00 pm.
