LAST TIME OUT
For the second game in a row, Newman struggled offensively as they would go 7-24 from the field in the first half. In the first quarter, Newman kept it close but Missouri Western went 3-5 from three to gain a 9 point lead, 18-9. In the second quarter Missouri Western continued to knock down shots as they would outscore the Jets 20-14 in the quarter to take a 15 point lead at halftime, 38-23.
 In the second half, Newman would continue to battle but Missouri Western would have an answer for every basket the Jets would make.  At the end of the third quarter, the Griffons had a 14 point lead, 57-43.  In the fourth quarter, Newman looked to make a comeback and had the game cut down to single digits but were unsuccessful as Missouri Western was able to hold on.

THE COACHES
Darin Spence is in his eighth season as the Jets head coach, leading the Jets to a 9-13 record so far in the 2019-20 season. Spence has compiled a 569-314 record as a head women's basketball coach over a 28-year span across NCAA Division I and Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA schools. His seven years with the Jets have seen him amass a record of 113-97 overall and a 59-53 mark in Heartland Conference play. During Spence's tenure, the Jets reached the Heartland Conference tournament in six of his seven seasons. Before coming to Newman, Spence spent one season at Barton Community College and eight seasons at Division I New Mexico State.

Tony Hobson enters his 12th season as head coach of the Fort Hays State women's basketball program in 2019-20. Hobson is one of the most successful collegiate women's basketball coaches in the nation, entering his 28th year overall with a career record of 650-200 (.765). He ranks eighth in win percentage among active coaches in NCAA Division II with a four-year college win percentage of .770 (448-134). Hobson is the winningest coach in program history, posting a record of 237-94 in 11 seasons at Fort Hays State (.716).

ABOUT THE JETS
Newman is 9-13 on the season, 4-9 in their first season in the MIAA. Newman has one player averaging double digits this season, Kaitlyn Potter at 16.6 points per game.  Abbey George and Madison Birnbaum lead the Jets in rebounding at 4.3 rebounds per game. 

ABOUT THE TIGERS
Fort Hays State is 16-4 on the season, 7-4 in the MIAA. The Tigers are led by senior guard Kacey Kennett at 12.7 points per game and have three other players averaging double figures. Bell Barbieri leads the team in rebounding at 9.0 rebounds per game.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the ninth meeting between Newman and Fort Hays State with the latest meeting being Nov. 20th, 2018 where the Tigers knocked off the Jets 72-60 in Wichita, Kan.

LAST TIME VS. FORT HAYS STATE 
Sophomore guard Braxtyn Stewart struck first blood knocking down a 3-pointer to begin the contest. The Tigers quickly answered with an 8-0 run gaining an 8-3 lead midway through the first quarter. The Jets would not go away as they answered closing the quarter on a 5-0 run, taking an 18-17 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, the Tigers came out red hot on the offensive side regaining the lead 25-18, with an 8-0 run. The Jets' offense cooled down missing their first four shots to begin the second frame. Sophomore forward, Hayley Albers continued to keep the Jets in the game recording 14 points in the first half as the Jets trailed at the break 38-30.
The Jets' continued to claw back on the Tigers in the third quarter as junior guard, Kaitlyn Potter caught fire scoring eight of her 11 points in the period trimming the FHSU lead down back down to 53-44. The Tigers closed the quarter on a 4-1 run taking a twelve point advantage into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the two teams continued to match each one on the offensive side of things. The Jets cut the Tigers lead back down to 65-57 with 3:40 to play, but the deficit was too much to make up.


UP NEXT
The Jets will return to action as they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Feb. 8th with tip-off slated for 2:00 P.M. for another MIAA conference matchup.
