WICHITA, Kan. – On Thursday night, the Newman Jets were hosted #13 Washburn Ichabods looking to bounce back after a tough loss last week at #3 Northwest Missouri State. Washburn had other ideas as they would take a big lead early and never look back on their way to a 95-69 victory over Newman.
The Jets would gain the early advantage with a
Jacob Birnbaum three point basket and (11-2, 11-2) would respond going on a 11-0 run. For the rest of the first half, Washburn would take control leading by as many as 21 points. The Ichabods would go into the halftime break leading the Jets 44-25.
The Ichabods would continue to control the contest in the second half as they would push their lead all the way to 27 points. The Jets would battle back a little in the half, but the deficit was too much as #13 Washburn would defeat the Jets 95-69.
Newman (2-10, 2-10) shot 23-52 from the floor for 44.2 percent, 5-17 from three for 29.4 percent and 18-23 from the free throw line for 78.3 percent. While Washburn shot 33-52 for 63.5 percent, and 12-22 from 3 for 54.5 percent. The Jets out-rebounded the Ichabods by 5, 30-25.
Joel Boyce led the Jets in scoring with a career high 25 points and 8 rebounds.
Branden Bunn led the Jets in scoring with 9 points and 2 rebounds
in the Jets loss.
Newman will host Emporia State on Saturday, Jan. 30
th with tip-off at 3:30 PM.
