WICHITA, Kan. - Newman hosted the #4 nationally ranked Washburn Ichabods on Saturday. The Jets fell in straight sets in Fugate Gymnasium.
The Jets fall to 9-14, 5-12 MIAA and the Ichabods advance to 22-3, 14-2 MIAA with today's result. The Jets are on the outside looking in for postseason play and have 3 games remaining to try and clinch a berth in the MIAA tournament which would be teh team's first ever.
Set 1 began in a back and forth fashion. Both teams were feeling one another out until Newman jumped out to a 6 point lead at 16-10. The Jets were on a 3 point run with a kill from
Imani Jones and service ace from
Natalie Morales when WU called its second timeout of the set. Washburn then tightened up their passing which led to consistent offensive play help the Ichabods even the game 21. The two teams traded points until the Ichabods finished off the Jets 28-26.
The second set played much differently as Washburn used a 5 point run to take a 14-8 lead and closed out the set 25-16 on another scoring run of 4 points. The Jets could not stop the Ichabods' roll.
Newman fell behind 8-1 in the final set and could not bring the score closer than 2 points the rest of the set. The Ichabods took the final set 25-17.
The Jets were led offensively by
Salome Romp and
Riley Daugherty who each had 10 kills. Romp earned a double-double with 12 digs playing the majority of the match in all 6 rotations.
The Jets do not have another home match for the remainder of the regular season. Next,
