WICHITA, Kan. - Newman hosted the Emporia State Hornets Friday night in Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets rolled to a 3-0 sweep as the team honored their three seniors.
Friday night began with a heartfelt congratulations and appreciation for the Class of 2022.
Jada Key,
Imani Jones and
Jenna DeVore have each seen the good, the bad and the ugly in their time with Newman Volleyball. Coach
Jose Lugo praised their dedication and perseverance as he trues to layout his vision for his club.
Following the ceremony, the match got underway. It was Newman's night across the board. Newman swung .282 to ESU's .089. Newman advances to 9-13, 5-11 MIAA this season with Friday's win. The win also marked the second sweep of the Hornets this season.
It was truly the seniors' night as the two middle hitters swung .500 with 6 kills a piece.
Jada Key also added 2 service aces and
Imani Jones recorded 5 solo blocks.
Jenna DeVore led the Jets with 19 assists and also picked up 5 digs as well as a kill on a wonderful skip set attack. DeVore's hitting percentage on the night? Of course it was .500 to tie Jones and Key for the team lead. Only the most fitting way to send these seniors off on their night.
The Jets were led in kills by
Salome Romp who slammed home 11 attacks.
Abby Borough was second on the team with 10 kills as she hit a tremendous .474. The back row was led by
Riley Daugherty who had 15 digs and
Natalie Morales, who has come on of late as Newman's steady libero, with 12.
Newman also saw some unfamiliar faces contribute as
Natalie Trigo recorded two service aces and
Olivia Parsley stuffed a Hornet attack with one block solo.
The Jets are sitting in ninth place with everything in front of them. The Jets welcome #4 ranked Washburn into Fugate Gymnasium for a conference match that will conclude their home matches on the season.
