WICHITA, KS - Newman welcomed the #18 Jennies to Wilkins Field Friday night. The Jets and Jennies squared off under the lights in front of a strong home crowd. The game went into a first OT where the Jennies scored the only goal of the match.
All night long the Jennies were creating chance after chance from the midfield. On the entire night UCM shot 21 times and put 15 of them on net. Newman finished with two shots and just one on goal. Looking at the numbers solely the Jets were not in the the match, but their play closed the book on that narrative immediately.
Newman goalkeeper,
Jackie Lari, was a wall for Newman. Nothing got past the keeper through 90 minutes. Stopping 14 of 15 shots, Lari set a new career high.
Lari's play empowered her teammates to keep fighting. At 64:29,
Makenna Schmal was assessed a red card for blocking a what would've been a goal with her hands. The move put the Jets down a player the rest of the match and gave Kassie Newsom of UCM an opportunity to put the Jennies ahead with a penalty kick.
Jackie Lari, again proved tough for her team. Schmal's move and Lari's save kept Newman in a 0-0 game.
The only term that fits what ensued for the next 25 minutes of regulation and two minutes of the first OT is
gritty.
Makael Whipple put the teams lone shot on goal in the second half.
Caitlin Davis,
Madison Shay,
Maria Stephens, and
Jordan Ashworth played all 92 minutes along with Lari in the net.
Jay Holmes' team fought hard all the way through.
At 91:54, Kassie Newman scored the game winning goal, beating Lari with an assist from Lexi Ruf.
After this loss, the Jets fall to 0-8-1 on the year which is again a case in point that the numbers do not define this team's performance. Up next the Jets host the MSSU Lions at Wilkins Field with kickoff slated for 1 PM on Sunday.
