PRYOR, Okla. – The Newman Baseball team took on the Northeastern State Riverhawks in a three game series on Thursday and Friday. The Riverhawks would take the first two games before Newman would win the third game in extra innings.
Northeastern State would put up four runs in each of the first two innings and two runs in the third inning to jump out to an early 10-0 lead in the contest. Newman would score one run in the fourth on a
Nick Caravello RBI single. The Riverhawks would answer right back scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 14-1 lead. Newman would score two in the fifth inning when
Enzo Bonventre would hit an RBI double followed up by an RBI single from Mitch Austin. The Jets would come up in the seventh to try and avoid the run rule and
Tyler Push would hit a solo homerun to make the score 14-4, but that would be all that the Jets would get in the inning as they would fall 14-4 in game one.
Northeastern State would jump out to another early lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. NSU would add to their lead in the third inning when they would score three runs pushing their lead to 4-0. The Riverhawks would add a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 7-0 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Jets would try to make a comeback as they would push across 5 runs, but would come up short of the Riverhawks.
Max Bajza would hit a two run homerun in the inning,
Hayden VanDePol would have an RBI single and Bonventre would hit a 2 RBI single to score all of the Jets runs.
The Riverhawks would score in the bottom of the first for the third straight game as they would take an early 2-0 lead. Newman would answer right back in the top of the second with an RBI double from
Jake Angelico and a 2 run homerun from
Jon Coufal to take a 3-2 lead. NSU would score two more in the bottom half of the second inning to take the lead back 4-3. In the third inning, Angelico would pick up and RBI with a bases loaded walk that scored
Devin Beard. Bonventre would score on a passed ball while the other runners would move up. Coufal would then hit his second homerun of the inning, a three run shot to put Newman up 8-4 after three innings. The Jets would put up another three spot on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when they would get back to back doubles from VanDePol and Beard to lead 11-4. Northeastern State would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning to cut Newman's lead to 11-5.
Caravello would hit an RBI double in the sixth inning to extend the Jets lead back to seven, 12-5. The Riverhawks would respond with a seven run sixth inning to tie the game up at 12. A sacrifice fly from Bonventre in the seventh would put Newman back ahead 13-12. Northeastern would be down to their last life in the ninth inning with a runner on second base when they would get a big time hit from Freeman that would tie the game up at 13 and force extra innings. In the extra frame, Newman would put up four runs behind an RBI double from Push, a two run homerun from VanDePol and a triple from Beard on which he would score on an error. After going up 17-13, Newman would give up a single in the tenth inning and that would be it as they would close the door on Northeastern State 17-13.
Tyler Push would go 6 for 14 in the series with 2 homeruns, 2 RBI's and two doubles.
Hayden VanDePol would go 7 for 13 with a homerun, 2 RBI's and two doubles.
Jon Coufal would go 5 for 10 with 2 homeruns, 5 RBI's and a double in the series.
