WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team took on Missouri Western in a three game MIAA series on Friday and Saturday. After dropping game one 6-4 and game two 11-7, the Jets would take game three 9-6.
Missouri Western would get the scoring started in game one with two runs in the second inning. Newman would cut the lead in half in the fourth with an RBI double by
Nick Caravello. The Jets would take the lead two innings later when
Jake Angelico would smack a two RBI triple to centerfield. The Griffons would tie the contest in the next half inning with a run before taking a 3 run lead in the eighth. Newman would get the bases loaded in the ninth, but would be able to only push one run across as they would fall to Missouri Western 6-4.
Game two would come on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. MWSU would put up three runs in the first inning on back to back homeruns. The Griffons would then put up two runs in the third and five in the fourth to take a 10-0 advantage halfway through the contest. Newman would plate three runs in the fifth inning when
Zack Hargrove would drive in a run and
Hayden VanDePol would drive in two runs with a double. The Griffons would get one run back in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun. With
Tyler Push on third base, VanDePol would draw a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ball four would be a wild pitch that would bring in Push making the score 11-4.
Daniel Quintanilla would hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the ninth as they Jets would try to complete the comeback. VanDePol would ground out scoring Push, but that's as far as the Jets would get as they would fall short of the comeback 11-7.
In game three, Missouri Western would once again get the scoring started by putting up four runs in the first inning. After the rough first inning, the Jets starter,
Connor Langrell would settle in and hold the Griffons scoreless for the next four innings allowing the Newman offense to get back into the ball game.
Max Bajza would get the Jets on the board in the third inning as he would hit a solo homerun to dead center. Push would get picked off in the inning, but would get in a pickle which would allow
Tyler Kretschmar to score before the final out got recorded to cut the Griffon lead in half, 4-2 after three innings. Caravello would drive in a run in the fourth inning with a single to right field making the score 4-3. Missouri Western would get one run back in the sixth inning before the Jets would push two runs across on an RBI triple from Caravello and a balk by the MWSU pitcher would make the score 5-4. Angelico would give Newman an insurance run when he would score on a failed pickoff attempt of VanDePol. Mitch Austin would drive in VanDePol to extend the Jets lead to 7-5. Bajza would tack on two more with a two run homerun over the scoreboard in left field making the score 9-5. The Griffons would get one run back in the top of the ninth, but
Crae Pfannenstiel would be able to close them out to secure the 9-6 win.
In the game three victory, Bajza would go 2 for 2 with two walks, two homeruns and 3 RBI. Caravello would go 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a triple. Austin would go 2 for 3 with a RBI, a double and a walk. VanDePol would go 2 for 2.
