WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team took on the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats in a three game series on Friday and Saturday. The Bearcats would take game one 12-2, the Jets would take game two 5-4 and the Bearcats would take the deciding game 9-5.
In game one, the Bearcats would take a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. They would add to their lead with another run in the third inning. The Jets would get one run back in the bottom half of the third on a
Tyler Push RBI single. Northwest would blow the game open in the fourth putting up 5 runs and jumping out to a 7-1 lead. The Bearcats would put up three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 10-1 lead. Newman would plate one run in bottom of the sixth with a
Jake Angelico RBI single making the score 10-2. Northwest would score two runs in the top of the seventh and hold the Jets scoreless in the bottom half to end the game after seven innings of play.
Derek Schumann would get the start for game two of the series, game one of the Saturday doubleheader. Schumann would go seven innings giving up seven hits and four runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out three Bearcats. Northwest would score the first run of the game in the first and the Jets would respond immediately in the home half on a
Mitchell Austin RBI single. The Bearcats would take the lead back with two runs in the top of the fourth to go up 3-1. Newman would respond by putting up four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with back to back two out two RBI singles by
Hayden VanDePol and Austin to take a 5-3 lead. Northwest would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be all the Jets would allow as they would close the game out strong on the mound with
Luke Thoreson and
Crae Pfannenstiel. The Jets would even the series at 1-1 with a 5-4 win in game two.
The Bearcats would put up a run in the top of the first and the third inning to take a 2-0 lead after three innings of play. The Jets would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth on an Angelico RBI sac fly. The Jets would take the lead in the home half of the seventh as they were able to plate 4 runs in the inning with RBI hits from
Kellan Landstad, Push, Angelico and VanDePol to take a 5-2 lead into the final two innings. Northwest would get one run back in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 5-3. The Jets would give up six runs in the top of the ninth inning to fall behind 9-5 heading into the final half inning of the contest. The Jets would get runners on in the bottom half and would get the tying run on deck, but wouldn't be able to drive anyone in as they would fall 9-5 in the series finale.
The Jets will be back in action on Friday, April 2 as they host Emporia State in another MIAA Conference series with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
