Box Score 3 WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team finished their homestand this weekend as Emporia State came to town for a three game set on Friday and Saturday. The Hornets would take game one 21-16 and game two 24-9, but the Jets would bounce back to split the doubleheader taking game three in walk-off fashion scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 9
th to win 9-8.
In game one, the scoring would start in the top of the first inning when Emporia State would score two runs to gain the early advantage. The Jets would score one in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout by
Jake Angelico that made the score 2-1. Emporia State would add to their lead in the next inning scoring 4 runs to lead 6-1. A passed ball would score
Devin Beard cutting the Hornets lead 6-2 after two innings of play. Emporia State would add three more in the top of the 3
rd making the score 9-2. A Beard Homerun would cut the deficit to 9-5 in the bottom of the 3
rd. The Jets were able to tie up the contest in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs which included a two run homerun by
Tyler Push and a two RBI double by
Mitchell Austin making the score 9-9. Emporia State would break the tie scoring six runs in the 5
th and two runs in the 6
th to take a 17-9 lead. Newman would score one in the bottom of the 6
th on a fielder's choice to make the score 17-10. After Emporia State plated two in the top of the 7
th, the Jets would cut the deficit to five scoring four runs in the bottom half making the score 19-14. Each team would score one run in the 8
th and 9
th inning and Emporia State would take game one by a final score of 21-16.
In game 2, Emporia State would start the scoring off in the top of the 2
nd inning scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead. The Jets would get on the board in the bottom of the 2
nd inning with a two run homerun by
Zack Hargrove, and a RBI single by
Hayden VanDePol tying the game 3-3. The game would remain 3-3 until the top of the 4
th When Emporia State would break open the game scoring eight runs to lead 11-3. The Jets would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a three run homerun by VanDePol cutting the deficit to 11-6. The Hornets would add two runs in the top of the 5
th and four in the top of the 6
th to jump out to a 17-6 lead. The Jets would strike for one run in the bottom of the 6
th with a RBI single by
Daniel Quintanilla which made the score 17-7 Emporia State. Emporia State would add to their lead in the top of the 7
th adding seven more runs to push their lead to 24-7. In the bottom of the 7
th inning, the Jets would push across 2 runs but it wouldn't be enough as Emporia State would take game two by a final score of 24-9 in seven innings.
Game three would be scoreless until the bottom of the 3
rd inning as the Jets would score one run on a RBI double by Austin. The game would remain 1-0 until the top of the 5
th inning when Emporia State would tie the game with a solo homerun. Emporia State would take the lead in the top of the 6
th scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Jets would respond in the bottom of the 6
th with a bases clearing double by Quintanilla to make the score 5-4. The Hornets would add three more runs in the top of the 7
th to take an 8-4 lead. The Jets would complete the comeback as they would score 5 runs in the bottom of the 9
th inning that included the game winning bases clearing three run double by
Devin Beard to put the Jets on top for good 9-8.
The Jets will hit the road for a three game set starting Friday, April 9 at Missouri Southern State for MIAA Conference play with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
