WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team started their road trip in Joplin as they took on Missouri Southern State on Friday and Saturday. The Lions would all three games of the series 8-1, 5-2, and 29-11.
In game one, the Lions would strike first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to the early 2-0 lead. The Jets would get on the board in the top of the 2
nd with a
Jon Coufal homerun to left field to cut the Lions lead to 2-1. Missouri Southern would answer back in the bottom of the 2
nd scoring one run on a RBI single to lead 3-1. The game would remain 3-1 until the bottom of the 7
th when Missouri Southern would plate five runs, taking an 8-1 lead. The Lions would shut down the Jets in the final two innings to take game one by a final score of 8-1.
In game two, the scoring would start in the bottom of the first inning when Missouri Southern would score two runs take an early 2-0 lead. The Jets would get on the board in the top of the 3
rd inning with a sacrifice fly by
Jake Angelico to cut the Lions lead in half, 2-1. In the bottom of the 4
th, Missouri Southern would score three runs on four hits to take a 5-1 lead. The Jets would cut into the deficit in the top of the 5
th scoring one run on a RBI double by
Kellan Landstad to make the score 5-2 in favor of Missouri Southern. Neither team would be able to push a run across in the remaining three and a half innings as Missouri Southern would take game two by a final score of 5-2.
In the series finale, Missouri Southern would strike first with a three run homerun in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The Jets would get on the board in the top of the 2
nd inning with a two run homerun by
Zack Hargrove that would cut the Lions lead to 3-2. Missouri Southern answered back in the bottom of the 2
nd scoring three runs to extend their lead 6-2 over Newman. In the top of the 4
th inning Hargrove would crush his second homerun of the game to right field cutting the deficit to 6-5. Missouri Southern would respond in the bottom of the 4
th inning, scoring two runs to extend their lead to 8-5. The Jets would tie the game in the top of the 5
th inning scoring three times including a solo homerun by Coufal. Missouri Southern would break the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring five runs including back to back to back homeruns to take the 13-8 lead. The Lions would break open the game in the bottom of the 6
th scoring 16 runs to extend their lead to 29-8. In the top of the 7
th the Jets were able to score 3 runs including another homerun by Coufal, but it wouldn't be enough as Missouri Southern would take game three by a final score of 29-11.
The Jets will continue their road trip with a stop in Pittsburg, Kansas to take on Pittsburg State for a three game set starting Friday, April 16 with first pitch set for 6:00 pm.
