JOPLIN, MO - When the Jets loaded the bus to head to Joplin, they had one thing on their mind. Win. Newman arrived at MSSU and got their brooms out as they swept the Lions 3-0 to open up conference play.
Newman is now 5-2 (1-0) on the season while the Lions fall to 3-6 (0-1) on the year.
Jose Lugo's squad was on point defensively holding MSSU to .105 hitting. The Jets cruised to victory over the Lions having a block party along the way. In set two the Missouri Southern was held to a -.114 hitting percentage. Newman's brick wall was spearheaded by
Imani Jones and
Kaylie Kovach who each had two solo blocks and assisted on another pair each.
The Jets stellar defense was not only at the tape, the back row showed out. Newman had 66 digs while
Paiton Haga tallied 23 herself. The libero added a service ace and 3 assists to her stat line.
The offensive attack was on point and the wealth was spread. As a team the Jets swung .280 against the Lions.
Kaylie Kovach and
Imani Jones both hit over .400 added 11 and 5 kills respectively.
Abby Borough added 6 kills swinging .357. The Jets were led in kills by
Riley Daugherty who tallied 12.
In all the Jets looked dominant start to finish winning straight sets 26-24 25-16 and 25-19.
The Jets return home Saturday for another conference tilt against UCO. The match is set for 12 PM in Fugate Gymnasium.
