SALINA, KS – After a first set filled with miscues by both teams, the Jets hammered away 3 sets in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan.
The Jets entering the first contest were looking to build off of the spring season completed earlier this year. The Coyotes having already played 9 games were looking to find a groove. This game allowed the Jets to show some grit and find their stride.
Set 1: The Jets could not surmount an 11-4 deficit despite multiple scoring runs. The Coyotes took set one 25-20, but that is all they would get.
Set 2: A real back and forth set found the Jets finding their grove as they took the 2
nd set by a score of 28-26.
Set 3: Newman found themselves behind early in set 3, but fought hard to stave off a hungry Coyote team. The Jets took this set 25-23.
Set 4: The first three sets were a big indicator of how things would finish. The Jets were down early found themselves trailing 21-20 before
Salome Romp closed the game out. Romp had enough of what the Coyotes were giving as she ripped off three straight kills putting Newman ahead 23-21. The Coyotes were finished off 25-22.
Salome Romp tallied 25 kills in the season debut.
Jose Lugo's squad amassed 64 kills and had 5 players with double digits digs.
Riley Daugherty led with 21 digs in her first career game as a Jet.
Jenna DeVore was setting her teammates up for success all night with 48 assists.
