Maize, KS - Despite not playing at their home, Wilkins Field, Newman was in a groove early against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Jets played Sunday afternoon's nonconference matchup at Maize Senior High Field in Maize, Kansas due to torrential rainfalls in the area Friday night into Saturday. The game was played at Maize High School where Head Coach
Jay Holmes coached 18 seasons prior to joining the Jets in August of 2020. Holmes had over 200 wins on that field and was looking to add another, but this time with Newman.
Newman was sharp early. Despite a few flurries of scorings chances by NWOSU, the Jets played a clean first half. Freshman,
Cassandra Moeder was a force throughout. Moeder had three shots, and two of them were on target. In the 22nd minute Moeder finessed the ball out of the Ranger goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net. This would be the only time Reagan Allen would falter for NWOSU. Moeder's goal was the first of her career.
The Jets were in clear control in the second half. The play continued to become more and more physical as the game transpired resulting in Cautions for Reilly Marks and Kailani Kealoha of NWOSU and
Bailey Stedman of Newman.
Jay Holmes' squad showed no signs of letting up until an errant pass by a defender led to an opportunity for the Rangers. In the 88th minute Tiara Campbell struck nylon with a feed from Reagan Allen. This goal would send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Rangers' Tiara Campbell netted the game winner after a shot from Jazlyn Norwood struck the crossbar.
Jackie Lari could not recover in time from playing the initial attempt as Campbell headed the ball across the line.
The result was a disappointment for the team, however, one bright spot was the offensive chances created by the Jets. Newman out shot NWOSU 14-8.
Up next: The Jets will host Rush Soccer Club in an exhibition match on Friday, September 10 at Wilkins Field. Kick off is slated for 7 PM on the campus of Newman University.
