Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jets drop road game to Washburn

WASHBURN, Kan. - The Jets Women's soccer team took another short trip up Kansas on Sunday afternoon to take on a Washburn Ichabods (10-4-2, 5-3-1) team that was looking to bounce back after their first 2 game losing streak all season. The game would see Freshman Maylani Birckbichler score her first career goal for Newman in the second half, but after facing a lively Washburn offense, they would fall 6-1.

First Half

The game opened up with Newman pushing the ball well as Morgan Houston got a shot off 5 minutes in that was blocked resulting in a corner kick. They would have to tighten up on defense for a bit until a run in the 16th minute resulted in a cross from Rachel Wolecki back to Houston who was able to get another shot, this time traveling just right of the goal. A great save shortly after by keeper Jordan Webster kept Washburn out of the net, but they would eventually go on to score the opening goal in the 28th minute. After another save by Webster, the Ichabods scored again off a corner kick to raise their lead. The Jets would have to continue to play defense for the rest of the half before getting a final push in the last few minutes, but they would be unable to score and would go into halftime trailing by 2.

Second Half

Washburn would score just after the start of the final half, kicking in a bouncing ball inside the box. Some back and forth play saw the Jets get the ball downfield, but they would be scored on again after a long shot in the 53rd minute. Newman were able to find the back of the net themselves in the 60th minute, as Jalyn McClean was fouled leading to a free kick taken by Maylani Birckbichler that sailed into the Washburn goal. They would be unable to keep the momentum going however, and Washburn would score twice more in the 64th and 75th minute, going on to take the game 6-1

Next Up

The Jets will be on the road again next Friday for the second to last game of the regular season, taking on the Northeastern State Riverhawks at 7 pm on October 21st.
