Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer's comeback falls short against #19 SNU

WICHITA - The Jets Men's soccer team began their final three game stretch of the season on Saturday night in a home match, hosting the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Tide (8-5-3), who are currently the #19 team in the country. Newman would be looking to continue a hot streak that started two weeks ago with a win over a #15 ranked Fort Hays State team, and two tough draws in the following matches. After going down by two in the first half, the Jets would begin to mount a comeback in the second, but would fall just short, losing 2-1

First Half

Despite not recording a shot until the 29th minute mark, the Jets were able to hold their own with SNU for most of the first half, as both teams went 50/50 with possession. SNU would open up the scoring for the match in the 13th minute following a free kick, as Bruno Ferreira sunk a shot into the low left of the goal. A few offside calls and a tough opposing offense would stunt Newman's ability to get close to the goal, but they would find  a pair of shots in the 29th and 30th minute to keep the #19 team on their toes. Four minutes later SNU would add to their lead, as Nathaniel Mederos fired off a quick shot to the right upper 90, boosting their lead to 2-0. Neither team would be able to get much more opportunities until halftime, with only one more shot from SNU that hit the crossbar in the 42nd minute.

Second Half

The final 45 minutes of play would see a much more focused and locked in Jets team, with them only allowing one shot for SNU in the next 45 minutes. They came out aggressive, with Cedrick Price getting a shot off three minutes into the half. After an SNU run ended with a goal kick for Newman in the 54th minute, the Jets flew down the field as Felix Tellez Ramirez assited Carlos Bellosta Manchon on a left foot shot that was sent strait past the keeper into the bottom right of the net. The next 36 minutes were full of intense back and forth play, with SNU trying to hold off an energized Jets team that was looking to ruin another ranked opponents weekend. Tempers flared with multiple yellow cards being dealt out, and one SNU player receiving a second yellow, being sent off the field in the final minutes of the game. After this, Newman would mount a last ditch effort with the resulting free kick, but they would fall just short as a shot from Manchon rang off the right post in the last minute of the game.

Next Up

The Men's team will take a final road trip on Thursday, October 27th at 1 PM to face off against the Northeastern State University Riverhawks, before ending their season at home next Saturday for senior day against Rogers State.
