Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Senior Night spoiled by Jennies as Jets fall in 4 to UCM

WICHITA - Newman opened up a 3 game home stand on Friday evening, welcoming in one of the conference's top teams the Central Missouri Jennies, a team that has been nationally ranked in recent polls but fallen out as of late and a team that came away with a 3-1 set victory against the Jets earlier in the season.

Friday was also Senior Night for 2 of Newman's own, Abby Borough and Rebecca Hageman. Both were honored before tonight's home match for their hard work and dedication they've put into the Newman Volleyball program over the last 2 and 4 years.

Newman got off to a slow start in tonight's match, finding themselves down 2 sets to 0 as UCM showed why they are one of the top teams in the MIAA as the Jets couldn't find an answer for Kersti Nix who finished the game with 20 kills.

Newman found their stride after being down 18-13 in set 3 before going riding an 8-3 run to tie the 3rd set at 21 before Jenna Schulte gave the Jennies back the lead 22-21. An Abby Borough kill tied it back up and Newman went on a 4-1 run to end the set and take set 3 25-23 after a Hannah Brisco kill and back to back kills by Riley Daugherty.

Newman has taken a set off of UCM in 3 of their last 4 matches.

UCM got back on their feet in the 4th set, jumping out to a commanding 14-6 lead before almost giving it back to Newman as Natalie Trigo served for 4 out of the next 5 points as Daugherty gave the Jets 3 out of their next 5 points, forcing UCM to call a timeout as Fugate grew louder.

The timeout worked in the Jennies favor as Newman would only score 4 more points the rest of the set, with UCM going on 2 3-0 runs and a 4-0 run to take a set 4 victory and win the match 3-1.

UCM outhit Newman .223 to .123 on the night as Nix led Central Missouri with 20 kills while Abby Borough and Riley Daugherty led Newman with 12 each. Borough and Ozioma Ajekwu led with 4 blocks each on the night. Mckinzie Weaver had 41 assists on the night with Natalie Morales ending the match with 33 kills.

Newman will have a quick turnaround from tonight as they will be right back at Fugate tomorrow afternoon as they take on Missouri Western in a matchup set for 1 PM.

Newman Volleyball and Newman Athletics thank seniors Abby Borough and Rebecca Hageman for their work and dedication to the Newman Volleyball program.
