WICHITA – Women's Volleyball hosted Missouri Western on Saturday, needing a win in hopes of staying alive at a chance of making the MIAA Tournament. Missouri Western defeated Newman earlier in the season in straight sets in St. Joseph, Missouri.
The Griffons defeated the Jets this afternoon in 4 sets as they extended their win streak vs Newman to 3, dating back to November 5
th of 2021.
Newman was outhit today .084 to .204 as they got off to a slow start in set 1, losing 25-19 before getting in a groove in the 2
nd set using a 5-0 run to take a 23-20 lead. The Griffons wouldn't go away quietly as they made it a 24-23 game but sophomore
Riley Daugherty stepped up big and put away the Griffons' chances of back to back set wins and gave Newman the set 2 victory.
The Griffons took control in the 3
rd set as they got out quickly to an 18-9 lead which was enough breathing room as Newman struck back with a 6-1 run to get back within 3, but MWSU answered back with a 5-1 run to take set 3 and a 2-1 lead.
NU didn't have an answer in set 4 with Missouri Western getting up big again, this time a 12-6 lead that gave the Griffons full momentum the rest of the way as they took the set and the match and knocked Newman's chances of making it into the tournament.
Hannah Brisco was impressive today on serves, earning 5 aces.
Ozioma Ajekwu and
Riley Daugherty were the lone Jets in double digit figures in the kill category.
Newman hosts their final home game of the season this Tuesday as they take on Central Oklahoma in a matchup set for 6 PM.
