Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jets lose heartbreaker at home in final minutes vs NW

WICHITA – The Jets Women's soccer team continued their four game home stretch on Friday night when they hosted the 6-4-2 Northwest Missouri Bearcats in the first cold weather game of the year. Fresh off their first win of the season, the Jets would look to keep up the momentum and improve their 1-10-1 record.

First half

The first half would see Newman fighting from their own side of the field for the majority of play, with Senior Maria Stephens playing a major role in keeping Northwest out of the net as she was able to put a stop to multiple runs. The first 31 minutes of play were some of the most stressful for the Jets defense all season, as they dealt with a number of shots and attacking runs without being able to get anything really going for themselves offensively.

Newman attempted to switch things up with a wave of subs in the 32nd minute, but they would see no real success in getting the ball downfield either. They were able to keep a clean sheet for the entirety of the first half however, as Junior keeper Jordan Webster was able to grab 7 saves before the halftime whistle and both teams would remain scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play.

Second half

The final half wouldn't be much different than the first, with the Bearcats running downfield to get a shot off seconds into the half. Newman would be able to get some offense going however, starting a couple runs of their own in the 53rd minute. After being pushed back again, they would fight back down the field and Sophomore Cassie Moeder would let off a shot from just outside the box in the 67th minute that traveled just left of the goal.

Northwest would finally be able to pierce the Jets defense in the 81st minute, as Teagan Blackburn scored off a shot to the low right corner and gave them the 1-0 lead. The Jets would attempt to find an equalizer, but would leave Wilkins Field scoreless.

Next up

The Jets return to Wilkins to finish up their home stretch this Sunday, October 9th at 1PM when they face a 3-7-3 Missouri Western Griffons team as they begin the final stretch of games for regular season play.
