WICHITA – The Jets Women's soccer team wrapped up a 4 game home stretch on Sunday afternoon, taking on a 3-7-3 Missouri Western Griffons team. Hoping to get their second win, Newman would come out aggressive in the first half with Forward
Elle Johnson scoring two goals to get them a 2-1 lead going into halftime. After an early second half equalizer and a late goal by the Griffons, they would end up falling 3-2.
First Half
The Jets started the game hot, with Johnson going on a solo run from midfield through multiple defenders and scoring her first goal just 6 minutes into the game. The Griffons would manage to sneak one in 5 minutes later with a long shot from Kaili Campbell, but a run down the far side from
Maria Stephens would set Johnson up for her second goal of the game and return the lead back to Newman. After another shot by the Griffons went high in the 37
th minute, neither team would find another opportunity to score, and the half would end 2-1.
Second half
The next 45 minutes of play would be almost an entirely different game, with the Jets having to do a lot more work on defense. An early goal in the 47
th minute for the Griffons would tie things up, and Newman remained at risk until a goal kick sent down the field allowed Stephens to let off a shot from just outside the box that was saved. Defensively the Jets held strong, allowing only a pair of shots in the next 29 minutes, but they were unable to string together any opportunities of their own either. It was a late goal scored with just 6 minutes remaining that would put the Griffons on top, as the Jets wouldn't be able to find the net again and would lose the game 3-2.
