WICHITA - Newman Men's Basketball returned home to Fugate Gymnasium for the first time this season to face Sterling College in their home opener. The Jets came in to tonight's game at 1-1 after finishing the Holiday Inn Express Regional Challenge with a win over Concordia St. Paul and a loss against Southwest Minnesota State.
5 Jets finished tonight's 95-64 victory with double digit points as the Jets out-shot Sterling 53.7% to 32.4% from the field.
It was a record setting night for Junior Ian Lee who went a perfect 8-8 on field goals and 4-4 from behind the arc. Lee set the record of consecutive field goals without a miss and finished tonight's game with 22 points, 2 shy of a career high. Â
"I thought he stepped up and made some timely shots." R.J. Allen said of Lee. "He's had a great attitude in practice every single day and we're just happy to see him get rewarded for his hard work".Â
The Junior from Toronto got his first start of the season and spearheaded the Jet's offense.Â
Khaleem Bennett followed Lee with 15 points of his own and a few monster slam dunks to bring the crowd at Fugate on to its feet in approval of the Jets who dominated tonight's game with a 31 point victory. Freshman Sam Somerhalder also had 15 points on the night coming off the bench to go along with 2 blocks.Â
Newman rolled into halftime with a 52-39 lead with Lee and Bennett each rallying 13 points in the first half. The lead would get down to as close to 11 in the 2nd half but lights out shooting from Lee and a 20-7 run gave the Warriors no chance of any sort of comeback.Â
Newman outscored Sterling 43-25 in the second half as they cruised to their 2nd win of the season.
NU shot 67.7% from behind the arc and came within 5 points of reaching 100.Â
The Jets (2-1) heads south as they'll take on Dallas Baptist (1-3) Saturday night at 6 PM in Dallas,Texas.Â
